📕 This novel is concerned with a real historical event, the discovery of atomic fission, and its immediate consequences. The events, some of the most decisive of our time, are seen through the eyes of people living close to them. The stories of these men and women - the stoical and subtle Martin Eliot, his wife Irene, his scientific colleague Walter Luke, and the ageing Cabinet Minister Thomas Bevill, other scientists, politicians, civil servants -are told with human realism and excitement. All their activities, in the middle of great impersonal happenings are rooted in everyday flesh and bone; and at the core of the novel is the relation, difficult, profound, tenacious, between the two brothers Lewis and Martin Eliot.
