The fortune machine

📘 Blackjack's the name of the game and this is a sassy green felt straitjacket about Eddie, just an unschooled boy from Brooklyn, who works out a computer system to defeat the probability of ruin at the tables. (You may remember him--for real.) He's sent to Las Vegas by his girl Mary, with five thousand dollars to stake him toward two hundred thousand. This will put him on a better than equal basis with her father, Mr. Hackett, who had decided that Eddie, in his Thom McAn shoes, couldn't keep her ""in shoestrings."" This then is the story of what Eddie racks up from that ruin probability in one casino after another: of the 68,000 dollars which are stolen; of the girls who are hired to divert him (particularly Lolly); and of his successful enterprise until he comes home to face the I.R.S., Mr. Hackett, and Mary. . . . Eddie has the advantage on every page and this is a feisty, funny story with all the riveting action of The Hustler or The Cincinnati Kid--maybe more.
