On the 31st of 10th month, seventh day, 18G3, a packet of letters was received by Sir Moses Montefiore at his country residence, Eastcliff Lodge, Ramsgate; and as it happened to be his Sabbath, they were all opened for him. Thus, as we may believe, providentially, one of them, whicli would, in all probability, have been forwarded unopened to his nephew, Joseph M. Montefiore, instead of being delayed, obtained the immediate attention of Sir Moses. Its purport was of pressing importance. It came from some of the leading members of the Israelitish community of Gibraltar, who were thrown into painful sympathy with their brethren at Tangier, whom recent occurrences had placed in alarm and danger. A Spaniard in Saffi, in the employ of his own government, or in the service of its Vice-Consul, had died so suddenly that suspicions of foul play, probably poisoning, were excited in the mind of the Spanish representative, who, in his official character, insisted upon the Moorish authorities investigating the case, and inflicting punishment on the guilty.
