If we except the speculative doctrines which current controversies obliged them to treat, it was principally and quite naturally the more practical questions of the sacraments and ecclesiastical discipline that engaged the attention of the writers now under review and their contemporaries'. It will not be useless briefly to note here certain statements and decisions deserving of particular mention. Speaking of baptism and the anointing with oil, Leidradus reproduces, en passant, a part of the definition of a sacrament given by St. Isidore: "Propter quod et sacramenta dicuntur, quia sub tegumento corporalium rerum virtus divina secretius salutem eorumdem sacramentorum operatur." 96 Theodulphus and Leidradus have each left a treatise,97 and Alcuin a letter,98 explaining the ceremonies of Christian initiation. There is nothing particularly striking in the treatises of Theodulphus and Leidradus.
