📖 Single waves with high amplitudes, sometimes calledrogue, or killer waves, appear surprisingly on theocean and sea surface. Such waves are very dangerousfor ships and for coastal structures due to theirdestructive high steepness and height. Is thereability to creation of these killer unidirectionalwaves in laboratory channel, in order to future testsof the ships and the coastal structures ability towithstand the impact, was studied. The spatialZakharov equation is applied in the present study.Evolution of unidirectional nonlinear wave groupswith wide spectra was studied experimentally andnumerically. A focusing of an initially wide wavetrain that is modulated into a single steep wave at aprescribed location along the wave channel wasinvestigated. The experimental study was carried outin two wave channels: a 330 m long Large Wave Channelin Hanover, and an 18 m long Tel-Aviv University wavetank. The study allows concluding that theunidirectional spatial Zakharov equation can serve asan effective computational model for description ofevolution along the wave channel of nonlinear wavefields with no limits on their spectral width.
