Neighborhood Context, Parenting, and Adolescent Smoking and Drinking 12+

📓 This book contains three studies. The first studyaddresses whether neighborhood influences onadolescent substance use are mediated throughparental and peer characteristics. The second studycompares differences in neighborhood mechanisms onadolescent substance use between census tracts andblock groups. The third study examines whetherparenting effects on adolescent substance use vary byneighborhood type. The sample includes 924adolescents 12 to 14 years of age whose addresseswere matched with 1990 census tracts and census blockgroups. The findings are as follows: (1) Parentingcharacteristics mediate the relationship betweenneighborhoods and adolescent substance use; (2) Thepattern of relationships in the tract model ofalcohol use is similar to that in the block-groupmodel of alcohol use. The block-group model ofcigarette use shows a different pattern ofrelationships than the tract model of cigarette use;(3) Six neighborhood types were identified throughcluster analysis. The impact of parenting onadolescent cigarette and alcohol use differs byneighborhood type.
