When he was four years old, the family removed to Ploumilliau, not far from the English Channel, in the canton of Tréguier which he regards as his native land. In this country so thoroughly Breton and so rich in legends of an earlier age, the youth of the boy was passed. His parents spoke French but his real language was the Breton that he learned from his play - mates. His father was a school - teacher who was much interested in the history and customs of Brittany. Naturally, in this environment the boy learned to share the beliefs and superstitions of the Bretons and became steeped in the poetry of the primeval nature about him.
