📕 Elements of the autobiographical abound in this story of a young Scot plunged into London life. Crockett offers many interesting observations of the life and times as well as insights into publishing and theatre. Pre World War I class inequality is clearly depicted, albeit wrapped in a love story.A pleasing story of a versatile young Scotchman, who armed only with an Edinburgh degree and an invigorating personality comes to London, falls in love with a woman who subsequently becomes his wife and makes his name as an author and a business man. His very naivete makes one like him.Crockett has surely used his own real life experience to great effect in the telling of this story. It is worth reading for the insights into the theatre, publishing and fame alone. But there is much more to engage and entertain the reader. The author never shies away from the reality of class inequality and its impact on pre First World War society. Yet it is undoubtedly a love story.
