🔖 Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2017 in the subject Education - Reading Instruction, grade: 7, Philippine Normal University, language: English, abstract: The study aimed to improve the reading skills of Grade VII Deaf students in Agusan National High School through the SMARE (Strategic Metalinguistic Approach for Reading Enhancement) Learning Tasks Work Book. A 30-item pre-test was constructed consisting of the three least-mastered competencies/skills which were the vocabulary development, noting details and logical sequence of events during the second quarterly exam for school year 2016-2017. The seven deaf participants took the following intervention learning tasks: Match Me, Pull-Me-Out, Wordy Pixs, Visually Right, Find the Elements, Elements Complete, Right Before Your Eyes, The Perfect Match and Labeling Up. Statistical tools used were frequencies and percentages. It was found out that the metalinguistic strategies applied in the different learning tasks greatly helped improve the reading skills of Deaf students. For recommendation, SPED and English teachers will be enticed to use the workbook to improve the reading skills of their learners; conduct remedial reading activities, and encourage teachers learn basic sign language in order to help the Deaf learners develop their reading skill.
