📘 Scott was uneasy about how The Betrothed would be received by the reading public, so it was originally published with The Talisman as Tales of the Crusaders on June 22, 1825. He shouldn't have been. The story here -- a sordid tale of Eveline Berenger and the de Lacys involving love, loss, seeming betrayal, and redemption -- was a good one; well received when published with The Talisman, and great fun to read now.
