📓 This is the first volume to describe and illustrated all the most important illuminated Insular manuscripts since E.H.Zimmermann's Corpus publication of 1916; and because Insular manuscripts have been much studied since then, there are many corrections as well as additions to his work. The volume includes some of the earliest surviving books made in the British Isles, and traces the development of their decoration from small initials and simple framing devices to the great carpet and initial pages for which the Books of Durrow, Lindisfarne and Kells have become famous. Seventy-eight manuscripts are described, and these include all the most lavishly decorated, the majority of which are Gospel Books and Psalters. A number of Continental copies of Insular books, which no longer survive, are included to give a fuller picture, and there is also a selection of later books in which the decorative vocabulary developed in the 7th and 8th centuries is still being used three or four centuries later.
The introduction briefly outlines the historical situation which lies behind the production of the manuscripts, the conversion of England to Christianity from Ireland and Rome, and then the Anglo-Saxon and Irish missions on the Continent. The illuminated manuscripts have sometimes been seen in nationalistic terms, opposing the achievements of Celts and Anglo-Saxons. It is suggested that a better understanding of the northern people's respective originality and inventiveness is obtained by examining the manuscripts in terms of their varying reaction to the alien, imported classical tradition from the Mediterranean. On this view, their originality lay in applying their skill in decoration and pattern-making to the embellishment of the book, often taking up earlier ideas, but enlarging on them and transforming them. Their development particularly of the initial as a vehicle of artistic expression, including probably the first use of the historiated initial, was to effect the history of book illumination for the rest of the Middle Ages.
