🔖 A number of books were written on loanwords, but this one is different. Most others talk on how languages borrow from each other: they illustrate concepts and theoretical issues. This book presents an empirical data from historical contacts and shows how a single language- Kanuri borrowed from three different languages- Hausa, Arabic and English. The differentials in loanwords indicate the level of contact and subsequent adaptation. Again this book without bogging down in theoretical details, sound change in Kanuri was illustrated diachronically and synchronically. With these, the book will be welcomed by any student of Arial linguistics, endangered languages and Historical linguistics.
