Davis was born and grew up and Freeport, Maine. He studied at Bowdoin, Boston University and the University of New Hampshire and spent a decade teaching at Bowdoin and Smith Colleges. His interest in aviation began at an early age when he attended the Maine State Air Meet at Augusta in 1937. Davis has authored six books ranging from environmental and biographical to historical subjects. In addition, he scripted and directed, Admiral Robert E. Peary: The Man and His Island, a video program featured on the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. Davis lives with his wife Eleanor in Yarmouth, Maine where he devotes his efforts to writing and landscape painting.
