Green was one of the first to write detective fiction in America, Her work is known for its legal accuracy and well plotted story lines. Her novels include, The Leavenworth Case (1878), A Strange Disappearance (1880), Hand and Ring (1883), Behind Closed Doors (1888), Forsaken Inn (1890), Marked "Personal" (1893), and The Doctor, His Wife, and the Clock (1895). The Mill Mystery is a book that can be classified as a sensational mystery. Green does an excellent job of giving the readers clues, but not enough clues to make the mystery easily solvable.
