Air and other gases are invisible, and hence are not readily recognized as matter. If, however, we Show that air possesses impenetrability, we have reason to believe that air is matter, since it possesses one of the characteristic properties of matter.
Experiment 1. - Float a cork on a sur face oi water, cover it with a tumbler as in Fig. 1, and force the tumbler, mouth down ward, deep into the water. State what evidence the experiment furnishes that air is matter.
