The Origin of the Red Cross. A Souvenir of Solferino

📘 Dunant was the founder of the Red Cross and in 1901 became the joint first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize together with Frederic Passy. The 1864 Geneva Convention was based on his ideas. This work, first published in the original French in 1862, records his memories of the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino which he witnessed during a business trip in 1859, and it was the inspiration for the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863. This English translation by a member of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Red Cross was first published in 1911, the year after Dunant's death.
