📓 Reid (1837-1912) was an American politician and newspaper editor. He was a correspondent at several battlefields during the Civil War, including Shiloh and Gettysburg, and in 1868 joined the staff of the New York Tribune becoming managing editor the following year. He purchased the paper in 1872 and controlled it until his death. As a famous voice of the Republican Party he was honoured with several ambassadorial appointments and took on other important political roles.This account of an investigative tour of the Southern States in the aftermath of the Civil War was first published in 1866.
