📖 Frederic (1856-98) was an American journalist and novelist. He finished school aged 15, worked first in the photographic business before becoming a proofreader and later a reporter. By 1882 he was editor of the Albany Evening Journal, then two years later moved to England as London correspondent for the New York Times, a position he held until the end of his life. Despite having published several earlier stories, it was the publication of The Damnation of Theron Ware in 1896 that brought him recognition as a talented novelist. This collection of four stories set around the time of the American Civil War was first published in 1894.
