📙 The author of the first part of this work was a lieutenant in the Oldenburg service who resigned his commission in July 1839, eventually travelling to Algiers to join the Foreign Legion as a volunteer. The account of his adventures was originally published in English translation by Lucie, Lady Duff Gordon in 1845. This new edition of 1854 also includes her translation of an abridged version of the narrative of a French navy lieutenant detailing his experiences of five months' captivity among the Arabs.
