📓 Stephens (1867-1906) was an American novelist and playwright. He joined the Philadelphia Press in 1886 and served as drama editor for the paper until 1893 by which time he had published short stories in various magazines. He later became a theatrical agent and began writing his own plays. One of his best known works was An Enemy to the King which appeared as a play in 1896 and a book the following year. It was adapted for the cinema in 1916. This historical novel, subtitled A Story of Love and Peril in England in 1746, was first published in 1905. With 6 full-page illustrations.
