📓 Gilbey (1831-1914) was an English wine-merchant and philanthropist who became well-known as a breeder of shire horses. He did much to improve the breed of English horses (other than race horses) and wrote extensively on the subject. This work, subtitled The War Horse: from the time of the Roman Invasion till its development into the Shire Horse, was first published in 1899. Illustrated throughout.
