📙 Murphy (1866-1928) was born on a farm near Monroe, Iowa, graduated from Simpson College, Indianola in 1888, and then became a partner with Edmund B Osborne in publishing the Red Oak Independent, a Republican paper. The pair soon began to manufacture and sell calendars, with this side of the business rapidly growing so that in 1891 they incorporated it as the Osborne & Murphy Co. In 1895 Murphy sold his share of the calendar business to his partner, promising not to engage in any similar venture for at least five years, and became sole owner of the Independent. He then purchased the Red Oak Express and combined the two papers under the name of the latter. In 1900, after Osborne had relocated to Newark, Murphy set up a new calendar business in his own name which went on to become one of the greatest concerns in the production of art calendars in the USA. Murphy travelled widely to gather rare art specimens for his calendars and went on to write a number of books based on his motoring tours. This title was first published in 1915 and is reprinted from the revised edition of 1921. Illustrated throughout with original paintings and photographs.
