📒 Duncan (1861-1922) was a Canadian author and journalist who also published as Mrs Everard Cotes among other names. After a brief period teaching she embarked on a career in journalism writing for The Globe, a Toronto paper, and later the Washington Post where she gained editorial experience and was put in charge of the current literature section. She continued working as a writer and editor for Canadian publications until a trip to India where she met and married an Anglo-Indian civil servant. From then on she divided her time between England and India and turned to writing fiction in place of journalism. Most of her works are in the setting of Anglo-Indian society, based on her own observations and experiences. This novel was first published in 1893 and is illustrated throughout.
