📓 Wells (1862-1942) was a prolific American writer of adult and juvenile fiction, and a poet. She wrote a total of over 170 books, concentrating on poetry, humour and children's books during the first ten years of her career before turning to mystery novels for adult readers. Among the most well-known of her mysteries are the Fleming Stone detective stories featuring the quiet scholarly private investigator, fond of good books and better manners, who is frequently called in to help the police solve seemingly impossible crimes. The series numbers 61 in total and this is an early Stone mystery first published in 1912.
