Harry, who is honest to his own standards, sincere and courageous, is looking back upon his life: the violent experiences in World War I in Austria and Italy and the horrors of the Greco-Turkish war. In SOLDIER's HOME Hemingway describes the estrangement from society of a young American soldier and in MY OLD MAN he tells the story of a warm and affectionate relationship between father and son, travelling in Europe from one race course to the other. Hemingway's style is tough, simple and colloquial, full of understatements, revealing tenderness of feeling underneath descriptions of brutality.
