📗 The fifteen essays contained in this volume were selected by the editors from the papers presented by social scientists to the 12th Science Congress held by the Royal Society of New Zealand at Massey University in January 1972. The theme of the Congress was "The Cost of Growth" and the majority of the papers included herein were delivered under the theme of "Growth and Its Impact on Society". The first part of the volume contains five essays on various aspects of New Zealand's human resource, its quality, quantity and utilisation. The second group are concerned with the continuing process of urbanisation, the growth and condition of New Zealand cities and the emerging awareness that some coherent national approach must be made to problems arising. The final section consists of essays on specific problems of current society, problems associated with adolescence, education and industrialisation, and concludes with an examination of the need for and problems of achieving better social accounts.
