New Masses

📒 New Masses was at the vortex of the cultural upheaval of the 1930s. Most of the leading writers and artists of that decade found a ready forum in the weekly magazine. Joseph North, one of its founders and editors, has selected from its pages the short stories, poetry, reportage, essays, criticism and columns which express the revolutionary spirit and literary quality of that dynamic periodical. In a Prologue, the editor tells of the inside history of the weekly New Masses and of its meaning for then and now. He has also made a liberal selection from the cartoons and drawings which helped make the weekly famous. An introductory essay on the place of that cultural revival in American literature by the American critic Maxwell Geismar is also included in this exciting anthology.
