📙 "Academic Encounters: American Studies" is a content based reading, study skills, and writing book that introduces students to topics in American history and culture that are relevant to life in the United States today. These high-interest topics include issues of constitutional rights, such as freedom of expression and the right to own guns; race relations; the blues, jazz, and hip-hop; and the interplay of American culture and cultures from around the world.
The companion book, "Academic Listening Encounters: American Studies", develops students' listening, note-taking, and discussion skills using authentic interviews and lectures and a variety of pre- and post-listening activities. The topics, which coordinate with those in the reading, study skills, and writing book, include civil rights, traditional American values in relation to life today, and the globalization of American slang.
