📗 Oxford Progressive Colour Dictionary is one of a number of Oxford dictionaries that have been specially compiled for learners of the English language. The text is taken from the Second Edition of The Progressive English Dictionary, the first and most elementary of them. The common purpose of these dictionaries is to provide definitions of words in the simplest terms consistent with accuracy. The dictionary offers a unique guide to the meanings, structure and usage of current English. It includes a vocabulary likely to be met in general conversation and reading and, as the spoken word becomes more important with the advance of mass communications through newspapers, radio, films, and TV, more attention has been paid to colloquialisms and contemporary words and phrases, which these media now bring into homes everywhere. The dictionary provides information on stress patterns, parts of speech, stylistic values (law, commerce, etc), irregular plurals and conjugations, comparatives -and superlatives, and the doubling of consonants. Where necessary definitions are supported by numerous illustrative phrases and sentences. The large number of coloured photographs and pictures are intended to reinforce the definitions and make recognition more immediate. The use of colour, besides being an attractive feature in itself, improves recognition even more, especially in dealing with the natural world.
