The war with Napoleon, known in Russia as the Patriotic War of 1812, provoked an unprecedented growth of national consciousness in all the social strata of Russian society, which led to the revival of interest in traditional values. The new cathedral, the main place of worship in Russia, became a symbol of Russian patriotism and manifested its major national idea that had developed within Russian Orthodoxy and was inseparable from the Church.
Construction of churches in commemoration of great historical events has always been a Russian national tradition. Many of these have survived to the present day. They include the Church of All Saints on Kulishki built in honour of the victory in the Kulikovo battle, the Intercession Church on Red Square commemorating the capture of Kazan, the Kazan Cathedral put up to mark the end of the Polish and Swedish invasion in the Time of Troubles, the Church of St John the Soldier in Bolshaya Yakimanka Street erected for the victory in the Poltava battle and others. The day of Russia's national liberation fell on Christmas Day, feast of the Nativity of Christ, so the main altar of the new cathedral was consecrated in honour of the great feast. According to the emperor's decree of 1813, after the Christmas liturgy litanies of thanksgiving were read in every church in commemoration of Russia's deliverance from the foreign invasion. The same litany is traditionally read in the reconstructed Saviour Cathedral on 7 January (New Style, the day when Christmas is celebrated in Russia).
